Fix Wound Spray: Key Ingredients

Fix Wound Spray contains oils extracted from two medicinal plants – St John’s Wort and the Neem tree. These oils, known as Hypericum oil and Neem oil, are combined with olive oil and packaged in an aerosol spray that can be applied to minor and major wounds. Fix Wound Spray also contains propane and butane.

Using Fix Wound Spray

Recommended dosage & directions

Fix Wound Spray is suitable for use on any wound (break in the skin), either open or closed.

This includes:

  • cuts
  • grazes (abrasions)
  • torn skin (lacerations)
  • burns
  • diabetic ulcers
  • bed sores (decubitus ulcers).

Fix Wound Spray can be used from the age of 1 month.

 

Step 1 — Shake well before use.

 

Step 2 — Spray Fix Wound Spray directly onto the wound bed and the surrounding skin area at a distance of 5–10cm from the wound. Ensure that the wound and surrounding skin are covered with a clearly visible oil layer. Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute, and then apply a second layer of Fix Wound Spray to the wound bed and surrounding skin area. Adjust number of puffs to wound size, and do not apply more than 20 puffs per day.

 

Step 3 — Cover the wound with a suitable dressing (e.g. a plaster or gauze held in place with a bandage).

 

It is recommended that treatment be repeated every 24 hours.

 

Precautions

  • For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
  • Do not use on individuals who have had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients of Fix Wound Spray.
  • In case of adverse events such as skin irritation or allergic reactions, remove dressing and rinse off the oil layer with water.
  • Fix Wound Spray is flammable and classified as a hazardous material, and its canister is pressurised, so it should be:
    • kept out of reach of children
    • kept in a cool well-ventilated place (at room temperature), and away from sources of ignition such as sparks, flames, hot surfaces and temperatures over 50°C (no smoking) 
    • protected from sunlight
    • used only in well-ventilated areas, and never sprayed onto a naked flame or incandescent material
    • disposed of as hazardous waste (see FAQs for further information).

Safety

Fix Wound Spray has a good tolerability profile. No serious adverse events have been reported to be associated with its use. A small number of cases of allergic reaction of have been reported after use of the spray, but these only occurred in people who had multiple allergies.1 This unregistered medicine has not been evaluated by the SAHPRA for its quality, safety or intended use.

FAQs

Fix Wound Spray is generally very well tolerated. In rare cases, its use has been associated with an allergic reaction. It is important to speak with a healthcare professional if you are concerned about possible side effects.

The Fix Wound Spray formula is not a high pressured spray, so application of the spray is not painful.

You can use Fix Spray daily for up to 30 days. After this, you should take a break from using it for 2 days.

Potential interactions between Fix Wound Spray and other topical treatments have not been assessed, so use of Fix Wound Spray with other topical treatments is not recommended.

No data on the safe use of Fix Wound Spray in pregnant and lactating women are available, so use of Fix Wound Spray is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.

Yes, Fix Wound Spray can be used from the age of 1 month.

Children from 1 month to 2 years: Do not apply more than 7 puffs per day. 

2 years and older: Do not apply more than 20 puffs per day.

Used Fix Wound Spray canisters should be handed over to hazardous waste disposers. They should not be disposed of with household garbage, and should never be pierced or burnt (even after use). This is because the canister is made from metal and may contain residue of dangerous substances, and the spray is flammable. Also, the spray should not be allowed to reach the sewage system.
